Don Giovanni does not go to hell for his questionable ethics and libertine values, he goes to hell because he killed the Commendatore and as a result, the established social order has been upended. The piece echoes Mozart’s relationship with his own father and it is of no surprise that this opera premiered only two years before the French revolution.
